What to do in Lecce

Walking in the historic center you will have the impression of walking in a museum: buildings, streets, churches… there are many historical and artistic testimonies in the city.

The fulcrum of Lecce’s social life is located in Piazza Sant’Oronzo where the famous column of the Patron Saint is located as well as numerous bars and restaurants.

Near the square there is also the Castle of Charles V, built in 1539, today the seat of the Department of Culture.

Another famous square in Lecce is Piazza del Duomo where the Cathedral dedicated to Maria SS is located. Assunta, built in 1144 and renovated in 1230, and then rebuilt in 1659 at the behest of bishop Luigi Pappacoda. This church is famous not only for the exterior but also the sumptuous interiors decorated in Baroque style with stucco, marble and beautiful paintings.

Also not to be missed is the Basilica of Santa Croce, a very strong testimony to the Lecce baroque style which can be admired on its main façade.

Another testimony, this time from the Roman era, is the amphitheatre, built in the 2nd century AD, where shows and games took place. The theater was destroyed at the beginning of the 20th century due to some earthquakes; today you can admire only 1/3 of the original structure. However, it manages to give a very good idea of what it meant in the past for the citizens of Lecce who enjoyed the games here.

In addition to its beauty, Lecce can count on its proximity to other very famous places in Salento. In fact, here you will find renowned beaches of inestimable beauty where the protagonists are expanses of white sand, wild cliffs and crystal-clear waters.
